How-To Guide

Quick walkthroughs for common tasks — updating statuses, syncing your library, searching the catalog, and getting around the app.

Update an anime status

Change whether an anime is Plan to Watch, Watching, Completed, On Hold, or Dropped — right from your profile or any anime page.

  1. 1Open your Profile page from the navbar.
  2. 2Find the anime card you want to update. Use the status tabs (Watching, Plan to Watch, etc.) to filter.
  3. 3Click the status badge or the pencil/edit icon on the card.
  4. 4A modal will open — pick your new status from the dropdown.
  5. 5Optionally adjust progress (episodes watched) and rating.
  6. 6Confirm your changes. The card updates instantly.

You can also change status from an anime's detail page using the action buttons below the banner.

Sync your anime library

Import your watch history and ratings from MyAnimeList or AniList so AnimeML can learn your taste and give better recommendations.

  1. 1Go to your Profile page.
  2. 2Look for the Sync section — you'll see buttons for MyAnimeList and AniList.
  3. 3Click the service you want to sync. You'll be redirected to log in and authorize AnimeML.
  4. 4After authorizing, AnimeML imports your list automatically.
  5. 5Once synced, your library entries appear under your profile with a synced-source badge.

Syncing is read-only — we never modify your MAL or AniList data. You can re-sync anytime to pull in new entries.

Get personalized recommendations

AnimeML analyzes your synced library and taste profile to suggest anime you'll love.

  1. 1Make sure you've synced your library from MAL or AniList first.
  2. 2Click Recommendations in the navbar.
  3. 3Browse your personalized feed. Each card shows why it was recommended (genre match, similar to what you've watched, etc.).
  4. 4Rate anime to improve future recommendations — click the star icon on any recommendation card.
  5. 5Toggle between grid and list view with the view-mode buttons at the top.

The more anime you rate and add to your library, the better your recommendations become.

Use watchlists

Create and share curated lists of anime — seasonal picks, hidden gems, genre collections, or anything you want.

  1. 1Click Watchlists in the navbar.
  2. 2Browse existing public watchlists or create your own with the New Watchlist button.
  3. 3Give your watchlist a name, description, and optionally make it public or private.
  4. 4Add anime to your watchlist from any anime detail page using the Add to List button.
  5. 5Share the watchlist link with friends — each watchlist gets its own page at /watchlists/[slug].

Public watchlists appear on the Watchlists browse page for other users to discover.
